Two Muslim writers on the New Testament and the Death of Jesus.

by Martin Whittingham, Director of the `Centre for Muslim Christian Studies, Oxford

Abstract Ibn Khaldūn (d.1406CE) has become one of the most famous of all Muslim writers. ‘Abbās Maḥmūd al-‘Aqqād (d. 1964CE) was one of the literary giants of twentieth- century Egypt and the broader Arab World. Both held positive views of the New Testament, to a degree, and this article explores how they discussed the crucifixion of Jesus. Both turn away from affirming it, but in very different ways, despite their relative openness to the New Testament in some respects.
