"A legitimate approach to the Islamic text does not necessarily mean that one needs to accept the traditional conclusions of Islam with regard to a specific issue. But it does mean that we adopt the Islamic method in using the tradition in qur'anic exegesis, even if we reach unconventional conclusions. Quite often we will find that the Islamic tradition is so rich in narrative options that finding a common starting point for constructive dialogue is not as difficult as Christians and Muslims of assume in today's conflictual reality."
